Required reading:

Santrock, John W. (1999). Life-span development (7th ed.). New York: McGraw-Hill.

Kagan, Jerome. (1998). Three seductive ideas. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press.

Aims of the course:

Psychology 340 is a survey course in human development. It takes a life-span perspective, which means we're trying to cover prenatal development, infancy, toddlerhood, early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence, and the various periods of adulthood--all in one 3-hour course. Needless to say, this is difficult to do in the time we have available! All the same, you will be introduced to many of the phenomena of normal psychological development in human beings, and to many of the theories that have been put forward to explain human development.

I don't have an attendance policy, because I don't think adults need one. It does not follow that skipping classes is a good idea. There is much controversy in psychology, sometimes over quite basic issues, so it is hard to get a full appreciation of the subject from the textbook. At times, I will cover material not in the textbook; at other times, I may cover similar material while being critical of the textbook's treatment. Regular attendance at class is necessary for success in this course.

Tests and grading:

There will be three tests and a final paper. The tests will consist of roughly 85% essay questions and 15% short answer questions. The final paper will be around 10 pages long (double spaced) and can be on any topic in life-span human development, basic or applied. If a real emergency (such as illness or death in the family) requires you to reschedule a test, please notify me before the scheduled test time so a makeup can be arranged. Your grade will be determined as follows:

TEST 1 22%
TEST 2 22%
TEST 3 22%
FINAL PAPER 34%

Cheating policy:

Cheating means providing or accepting information on a test (tests are meant to be your individual work). If you decide to cheat, I will take action against you according to University policy.
